Opportunities for Starting Research
1. First Year Fralin Undergraduate Research Fellowship (FY-FURF)
The First-Year Fralin Undergraduate Research Fellowship (FY-FURF) Program will provide first-year students—who are new to research—with authentic research experiences in their chosen discipline, under the direct mentorship of a faculty member. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.

Applications are due October 30, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
2. National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program
The National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program (NNSA-MSIIP) offers full-time summer internships, with opportunities to continue during the academic year.
Undergraduate and graduate students from accredited Minority Serving Institutions receive:
- Stipends starting at $750/week
- Allowances to offset the cost of:
- Commuting: $50/week
- Housing: Varies based on location
- Travel to and from the hosting site: $1,000
- Virtual Participation: $150/week
Opportunities are available not only in STEM but also in communication, management, business, policy, law, and other disciplines that support the NNSA Mission. Applications can be found on the NNSA-MSIPP application webpage. The application deadline is October 27, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.
3. AAD Student Initiated Research Grant (SIRG)
The College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD) has established the Student Initiated Research Grant (SIRG) program to support AAD students’ research and creative scholarship. Each year, we anticipate making up to ten awards with each award up to $750.
More information and application instructions can be found on the SIRG webpage. Applications are due October 23, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
4. TUM Practical Research Experience Program (PREP)
For students interested in summer research abroad, the TUM-PREP program will allow select students to work on one of over 75 different projects through the Technical University of Munich, Germany.
- Research projects from a variety of disciplines (management, social sciences, natural sciences, architecture, life sciences, technology, engineering, and more!)
- Accepted students travel to Munich Germany from July 1-August 22, 2025

5. Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program (MAOP) Summer Research Internship
For students interested in summer research at Virginia Tech, the MAOP Summer Research Internship has a variety of projects in areas of STEM, Social Sciences, Architecture, and Veterinary Sciences. Students selected for the internship will receive:
- $3,000 stipend
- On-Campus housing
- Meal Plan
- Graduate/Professional School Preparation
- Social Activities and Events

6. University of Limerick Ireland Summer STEM Research Program
The University of Limerick Ireland (UL) Summer STEM Research Program is an 8-week program where you can embark on a project of your choice, closely guided by experienced mentors in state-of-the-art facilities. Enhance your skills and knowledge as you collaborate with UL researchers and even conduct your own pre-approved research project.

Opportunities for Students Participating in Research
1. Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program
The ICTAS Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program supports early career undergraduates involved in mentored research at Virginia Tech. Each spring, one student will be selected to receive the $1,250 award, payable as a fellowship or used to cover other approved expenditures (such as project supplies, research-related travel, use of specialized research services, etc) over the course of one semester or a summer.

2. Undergraduate Research Showcase on the Capital
The Undergraduate Research Showcase at the Capitol is a unique opportunity for undergraduates to share their research and creative scholarship with state legislators and help them to understand why funding undergraduate research experiences across the Commonwealth is so important. We invite YOU to share your research.
- The showcase will be on February 6, 2025, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the General Assembly Building in Richmond, VA.
- Travel and food provided for the showcase
Application deadline is November 11, 2024.

3. Virginia Women in High Performance Computing Student Lightning Talks
the Virginia Women in High Performance Computing (VA-WHPC) will be hosting a Student Lightning Talk event on Tuesday, November 12th, from 1-2 p.m. over Zoom. This is a wonderful opportunity for 8-10 enthusiastic students to showcase their research in a 3-minute lightning talk to a diverse audience from Virginia’s high performance computing community.
If you are interested in being a speaker, please complete this form by October 24. Selected speakers will be contacted by October 25. Additional information, including resources for preparing your lightning talk and mentor expectations, can be found VA-WHPC guidelines webpage.

1. Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Early Identification Program
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is excited to announce that the 2025 Early Identification Program application is now open! The Early Identification Program (EIP) is a two-year summer preparatory program, which is designed to help strengthen a participant’s application to medical school.
The first summer of the program provides students with the opportunity to participate in hypothesis-driven research at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. The second summer, students shadow clinicians throughout various departments and specialties at Carilion Clinic in the Roanoke Valley.
The program also includes the following:
- Free MCAT preparation and tutoring
- Application counseling
- Free room and board
- $3000 stipend each summer.

2. Institute for Broadening Participation Undergraduate Scholarships and Fellowships
The mission of the Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP) is to increase diversity in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. IBP offers over 60 undergraduate research scholarships and fellowships for students.

3. Medical School Admissions Advantage (MSAA)
Registration for the Medical School Admissions Advantage, a networking event for VT students and representatives from allopathic and osteopathic medical schools, is OPEN. Meet with and learn from medical school representatives in three 10- to 15-minute small-group conversations, followed by 45-60 minutes of open networking.
Before registering, please check your calendar carefully. Signing up for the event is a professional commitment. Arrivals are expected by 6:30 p.m. and attendees are expected to be present for the full event.
