Give

"Every Virginia Tech undergraduate will have the opportunity to participate in either an internship in a field related to their studies, or in a meaningful undergraduate research experience, or both. We have ample data to show that these opportunities open doors and raise ceilings. We owe it to our students to make these experiences available."
- Timothy D. Sands, President of Virginia Tech

What we do

The Office of Undergraduate Research is the hub for undergraduate research and creative scholarship at Virginia Tech.

Here, we work to guide students to research and creative scholarship experiences on-campus, around the nation, and the world. We offer fellowships to support their research, and travel grants so they may present their work. We help them develop the skills they need to communicate their work, and take them to regional and national conferences so they can put those skills to practice. Twice a year, we hold university-wide undergraduate research symposia, showcasing the work of hundreds undergraduates through poster sessions, oral presentations, installations, or performances. We seek to connect our students with resources, with mentors, with communities of scholars, and, ultimately, with opportunity.

By combining a first-rate classroom education with the lessons, knowledge, and deep understanding gained through hands-on experience and the creation of original work, these young adults, our graduates, will leave Virginia Tech confident in who they are, in their fields-of-choice, and in their abilities to realize their visions of how they want to change the world.

With your help, we can achieve President Sand's goal and every Virginia Tech student will have the opportunity to “raise the ceiling”, to “open the door” to their future, no matter their ability to pay.

Ways to support

All donations are greatly appreciated. No amount is too small. There are two funds to which you can give. Either way, your donation will go directly towards supporting student engagement and opportunities in undergraduate research.

Undergraduate Research General Support Fund

This fund supports students engaged in undergraduate research through:

  • competitive research fellowships
  • travel to conferences
  • student development workshops
  • other areas directly impacting student success and engagement in undergraduate research

Dennis Dean Undergraduate Research Symposium Fund

Established in 2015 through generous donations of faculty members, this fund is named in honor of Dr. Dennis Dean, Director of the Fralin Life Science Institute, in recognition of his tireless support for undergraduate research.

Donations  support the annual campus-wide Dennis Dean Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship conference, a week-long celebration that showcases the work of hundreds of undergraduates in poster, oral, installation, or performative formats.
